Snead Suspension Handed Down...

Times Dispatch: Snead Suspended

Richmond Braves outfielder Esix Snead was suspended for 10 games today by the International League for his role in this week's brawl with the Syracuse Sky Chiefs. R-Braves manager Pat Kelly was also suspended for one game by the IL. 20 other R-Braves were fined for their roles in the melee. Surprisingly, James Jurries was not suspended.

any word as to if the braves will release snead?

Posted by: utjunkie at June 17, 2005 12:01 AM

What are fines like in the Minor Leagues? I was very interested to see that 20 players would be fined.

Posted by: Raoul Duke at June 17, 2005 02:41 AM

I don't think they would release Snead. It wouldn't sit well with the Richmond players.

Posted by: Dreamscape at June 17, 2005 02:47 AM

Fines are generally in the $100-400 range for the IL. I caught that in another article concerning this fight (and I am too lazy to go find it again).

Posted by: Merv at June 17, 2005 09:19 AM

This probably bugs me a lot more than it should, but who cares what would sit well with the Richmond players. The guy used his batting helmet to attack a pitcher whose back was turned. Sometimes people get in fights in baseball, and I can live with that. But a cheap shot with equipment used as a weapon should be totally unacceptable. If it's not unacceptable for the league (and clearly it isn't if it only warrants a ten game suspension), then it should be for the organization at least. If they want to let him stay around and serve his suspension, that's not so bad. I just hope he's released as soon as it's done.

Posted by: creynolds [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 17, 2005 11:05 AM

He did not use his helmet... He had dropped the helmet.

Posted by: utjunkie at June 17, 2005 12:11 PM

Richmond should have already released Snead. It's an embarrassment that they have yet to do so. I mean, the guy can't even play baseball. I don't think the players are really behind him. And if they are, they shouldn't be. They are going to bear part of the brunt of any on-field retaliation. There are rules to baseball fighting, and Snead clearly violated the no cheap shot rule.

Posted by: JC at June 17, 2005 12:29 PM

Go to this link:

Video of Event

You can watch the brawl from there. Snead had dropped the helmet before reaching the mound. I think the whole "hitting the pitcher" with the helmet thing was just some journalism used to perk the story up.

Posted by: Merv at June 17, 2005 12:31 PM

Doesn't look like anything that would warrent him being released. Yeah, the pitcher had his back turned, but I don't think Snead planned it that way, I think he just decided to charge a third of the way down the line. Also, he just tackled him (at least initially) and the helmet was clearly dropped before he got to the mound.

Posted by: ermoore at June 17, 2005 01:57 PM

UT and Merv - I came back to correct myself after I saw the full video via a link on JC's site (the one I saw on the ajc site didn't include the beginning). I still think it was a cheap shot and that he should be released. But I have to admit that I may be influenced by the fact that he is useless as a player, and that him being in the organization possibly looking like a major league option to some keeps me up at night.

Posted by: creynolds [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 17, 2005 06:20 PM

I wish I could've seen the earlier pitch that had Snead riled. It didn't look much different than most brouhahas I've seen, except the pitcher was dumb enough to turn his back on a batter he just busted in the ribs! You'd think he would've learned better, sooner. I actually think the suspension for Snead is a bit excessive, but I'm old school. I've seen pitchers drill guys who charged the mound and that was the extent of it. I recall Robin Ventura rushing the mound against Nolan Ryan, I believe, and Ryan pretty much whipped his ass for him. I don't think either guy was suspended.
I did get a big laugh out of the business of the manager getting suspended for 1 game for not controlling his player better. Exactly what could he do, short of being a mind-reader, that could've prevented the player losing it and rushing the mound on his way to first?
This stuff is rich! Ha ha ha!

Posted by: Freddy_Ballgame at June 18, 2005 01:27 PM

Except that he didn't even get hit. Bush did throw a pitch that apparently went through Snead's legs (this is according to "reporting" which mislead me on the whole helmet thing, though). But he definitely did not get plunked in that AB. As far as I know, the only person who had been hit in the game was Gabe Gross. If Snead had been hit and then rushed the mound... or if he'd rushed the mound right after the pitch that somehow ended up going between his legs... I'd probably feel different (although not about his usefulness as a player, of course). But he stood in for a few more balls to earn a walk, and then only went to the mound after he'd gotten up the line toward first AND the pitcher's back was to him. Even if you're old school, I think the total picture shows pretty low-class behavior.

And I think the issue with Pat Kelly was that he got into with Bush to some extent. I don't think it was physical, but he apparently did egg him on. I think it's reasonable to expect a manager to at least stay out of the mele, if not somehow attempt to cool things off.

That Ryan/Ventura thing was definitely a classic. And fighting in general doesn't bother me all that much. Suspensions still make sense, because you do want to discourage it. But I don't think people should be released for fighting. Cheap shots like this, however, are a different thing in my mind.

Posted by: creynolds [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 18, 2005 03:01 PM

I was under the impression the pitch hit Snead. I couldn't see it clearly on the video. (I'm still on a dial-up modem!) I should've read the accompanying article closer. After reviewing it, I agree with you CReynolds, Snead was waaayyyyy out of line and the suspension was deserved. Along with some anger management classes and an immediate steroid test! Dude became enraged over a close pitch? It does say the teams had a history, but that's no excuse for what Snead did. It was bush. Thanks for setting me straight!

Posted by: Freddy_Ballgame at June 18, 2005 07:53 PM

The history, though, indicates a lot. The night before, three or four batters got hit and Matt Whiteside got pissed at Snead for trying to bunt in the ninth of a four or five run game and challeneged his manhood and such. There was no place in baseball for either team's actions and while Snead receives the punishment, the Chiefs weren't exactly innocent either.

Posted by: Dreamscape at June 19, 2005 12:41 AM

Freddy, thank you. I am so sick and tired of seemingly everyone around thinking Esix was the only bad one in this.

And I don't know who it was up top who was surprised that JJ didn't get suspended...what did JJ do except get dragged around by Adrian Burnside and have his jersey ripped off by the guy? Why didn't Burnside get suspended?

Bush called Esix something after he walked him (just before he turned around and went for the rosin bag). No reason for Esix to really do what he did, that was bad. But again, people are making Syracuse out to be so sweet & innocent.

I thought it was funny how when the pile got closer and closer to Matt Whiteside he backed away like a big baby. At least he could have helped pull people off the pile. Shows what a great guy he is, the pot-stirrer (i.e. the one who really started the whole thing).
