Minor League Recap for 8/5

Notes -- Jake Stevens back on form in Rome ..... Danville wins their fourth straight to take a 1/2 game lead over Pulaski for the division lead ..... Richmond all wet yet again ..... Brett Evert scuffling big time ..... James Parr with a solid effort in Orlando to break an eight game losing streak.

Baseball America has posted their annual Best Tools Survey (premium article) on their website. Some of the Braves highlights:

Transactions -- P Rolando Garza to the DL in Rome. IF Ben Thomas sent down from Myrtle Beach to fill his roster spot. LHP Luke Franzenburg has been signed by the Braves out of Mount Mercy College in Iowa and assigned to Orlando in the GCL. (Hat tip to 50LB. in the comments for the link)

Norfolk Tides at Richmond Braves -- Postponed due to rain. Game scheduled to be made up as part of a doubleheader on August 11th.

Greenville Braves 4, Mobile Bay Bears (SD) 12 -- Box Score
Brett Evert was smoked for eight runs on six hits, two walks and a strikeout in three innings in the start, as the Braves lose big to the Bay Bears 12-4.

1B Scott Thorman was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and both LF Napoleon Calzado and C Lee Evans drove in a run. CF Kelly Johnson and SS Tony Pena each had a double for their only hit of the night, and 3B Andy Marte was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

All eight runs off of Evert came in the second inning where Mobile went deep three times. The loss drops him to 2-3 with a 4.85 ERA for the G-Braves. Ray Aguilar went the final five innings, allowing four runs - three earned - on seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

Salem Avalanche (HOU) 2, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 4 -- Box Score
RF Ardley Jansen and 2B Jonathan Schuerholz each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and both 1B Isaac Iorg and 3B Wes Timmons drove in a run on a 1-for-3 night as the Pelicans beat the Avalanche 4-2 Thursday night at Coastal Federal Field.

Efigenio Peralta went four innings in the start, allowing a run on three hits, six walks, and three strikeouts. Paul Bush posted a similar line aside from the walks, giving up one run on three hits, two walks, and four strikeouts in four innings to pick up the win and move to 3-2 on the season. Glenn Tucker notched his 15th save with a perfect ninth, striking out one.

Kannapolis Intimidators (CHW) 6, Rome Braves 3, 10 Inn. -- Box Score
Jake Stevens bounced back strong from a poor last outing, allowing two runs - none earned - on one hit, three walks, and six strikeouts in six innings in the start, but a three-run double by the Intimidators in the top of the tenth off of Braves reliever Jose Ascaino proved to be the difference maker, as Rome falls 6-3.

1B Carlos Guzman hit his 11th homer of the season - a solo shot - on a 1-for-4 night, and also struck out twice. 2B Martin Prado was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and RF Steve Doetsch also doubled and drove in a run on a 1-for-4 night with two strikeouts. LF Josh Burrus was 3-for-5 with a double.

GCL Tigers 2, Orlando Braves 4 -- Box Score
Orlando bounced back from yesterday's no-hit effort by the Tigers behind a solid outing from James Parr, who logged five shutout innings in the start, giving up three hits, one walk, and striking out seven as the Braves take the win 4-2.

DH Eric Campbell paced the offense with a 3-for-4, two RBI, two run afternoon, and 3B Maximiliano Ramirez added two doubles on a 3-for-4 day and drove in one. RF Jon Mark Owings added the other RBI, going 1-for-4 in the win.

Parr picks up the win to move to 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA on the season. Blake Cross picked up his third save, allowing one run on two hits, a walk, and a strikeout in the ninth inning.

Brad,
I see you have RHP Jose Ascaino listed in GCL. He has stats for Rome only and none for GCL. Did he recently get demoted or injured?
