Minor League Recap for 8/4
Notes -- Dan Meyer on form in Richmond, but he can't prevent them from dropping their sixth straight. What has happened to Anthony Lerew all of a sudden? Big fireworks display in Danville with the Braves coming out on top. Orlando no-hit in the GCL - they are struggling big time.
Player of the day -- Cole Armstrong (Danville) 3-5, HR (3), 5 RBI, 3 R
Richmond Braves 3, Norfolk Tides (NYM) 4 -- Box Score
Dan Meyer pitched five strong innings in the start, allowing just one unearned run on five hits, two walks, and five strikeouts, but Norfolk put up three in the sixth on recently demoted Sam McConnell - only one earned thanks to an error - as the Braves lose to the Tides 4-3.
3B Wilson Betemit was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and CF Dewayne Wise was 2-for-5 and knocked in one, but committed that costly error in the sixth. RF Ryan Langerhans was 1-for-4 with a double, and LF Billy McCarthy added a hit and a run scored.
McConnell picks up the loss to fall to 6-5 with the R-Braves. Roman Colon tossed two hitless innings of relief, walking one and striking out three.
Additional Stats:
1B James Jurries 0-2, K
Record: 58-51, 2 GB of Durham
Streak: Lost 6
Greenville Braves -- Scheduled off day.
Record: 21-16, 3 1/2 GB of Chattanooga
Streak: Won 1
Myrtle Beach Pelicans 1, Kinston Indians 10 -- Box Score
Wow, right after I praise Anthony Lerew for his consistency, he gets bombed for his second straight outing. Lerew lasted just 3 2/3 innings in the start, allowing eight runs - only four earned - on 10 hits, two walks, and three strikeouts as the Pelicans are smoked by the Indians 10-1.
The Myrtle Beach offense managed just four hits in the loss. CF Gregor Blanco was 1-for-3 with a triple, and C Miguel Bernard added a double on a 1-for-3 night for the Pelicans only extra base hits. 1B Isaac Iorg was 1-for-4 and drove in the only run. They also committed three errors in the field to lead to their demise.
Lerew drops to 8-7 with a 3.36 ERA after the loss. If his next start goes anything like the last two, it's time to start asking questions. Iorg made an appearance on the mound in the ninth, fanning the only batter he faced.
Additional Stats:
LF Jamie Hemingway 1-4
P Scott Sturkie 3 1/3 IP, 3 H, SO
P Ryan Basner 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 SO
Record: 21-18, 4 GB of Winston Salem
Streak: Lost 1
Kannapolis Intimidators (CHW) 3, Rome Braves 5 -- Box Score
LF Josh Burrus hit his ninth homer of the season on a 2-for-3, one RBI night, and both C Jarrod Saltalamacchia and DH Scott Schade added a hit and two RBI, as the Braves beat the Intimidators 5-3.
Steve Russell worked a solid six innings in the start, allowing three runs - two earned - on seven hits, a walk, and a strikeout to pick up the win and move to 5-5 on the season with a 4.20 ERA. Ricardo Rodriguez picked up his eighth save with two innings of scoreless relief, giving up two hits and striking out four.
Additional Stats:
CF Matt Esquivel 0-4, 3 K
RF Steve Doetsch 0-3, BB, 2 K
2B Martin Prado 1-4, R
Record: 20-18, 4 GB of Capital City
Streak: Won 3
Danville Braves 15, Elizabethton Twins 12 -- Box Score
Screw pitching, bring on the offense! Paul Bacot was rocked for six earned on eight hits in 1 2/3 innings in the start, but the D-Braves offense had his back, led by C Cole Armstrong and his 3-for-5, five RBI night, including his third homer of the season as the Braves handle the Twins 15-12.
3B Van Pope added his third homer of the season on a 1-for-4, two RBI night, and DH Mark Jurich launched his seventh, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. 2B J.C. Holt was 4-for-6 from the leadoff spot and swiped two bases, giving him ten on the season.
None of the four Danville pitchers in action escaped unscathed. Dan Smith (2-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits, two walks, and a strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.
Additional Stats:
CF Carl Loadenthal 1-4, RBI, 2 R, 2 BB, K
RF Brandon Jones 2-5, RBI, 2 R
SS Mike Rozema 2-5, RBI, SB (4)
P Brady Endl 3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB, 6 SO
Record: 26-17, 1/2 GB of Pulaski
Streak: Won 2
Orlando Braves 0, GCL Tigers 2 -- Box Score
Not much I can say about this one except that the Braves were no-hit by the Tigers to drop their eighth in a row.
Nelson Payano and Glen Richards pitched well in their own right if you can take away anything positive from this game. Payano went six innings in the start, allowing two unearned runs on four hits, two walks, and three strikeouts to take the loss. He falls to 1-1 on the season with an outstanding 0.52 ERA. Richards tossed two hitless innings of relief, striking out two and lowering his ERA to .046.
Additional Stats:
SS Eric Campbell 0-3, K
DH Maximiliano Rodriguez 0-3, 2 K
Record: 14-25
Streak: Lost 8

Comments
I am loving this Danville team to death. I sometimes do intermittent score checks during the evening and I have come to expect that no deficit is too big for this team to overcome.
There's usually a 5-spot somewhere each night.
They are an experienced team with a few college guys so they should do fairly well, but who cares? This is fun!
